Mira Nair is prepping for 'A Suitable Boy'

Monday, June 17, 2019

Filmmaker Mira Nair (‘Salaam Bombay’, ‘Monsoon Wedding’) had announced at the Cannes Film Festival last month that her long cherished TV adaptation of Vikram Seth’s award-winning 1994 novel ‘A Suitable Boy’ will begin filming in Delhi and other locations across India from September onwards. Mira has by now firmed up on most of the casting  -- the actors will include Tabu, who the filmmaker directed in ‘The Namesake’, as well as Shefali Shah, Randeep Hooda and Vijay Raaz, all of whom appeared in ‘Monsoon Wedding’. Naseeruddin Shah may also be seen in a prominent role, while others in the cast will include Vivaan Shah, Vijay Varma from ‘Gully Boy’ and Vivek Gomber. At Cannes, Mira had said: “We’ve cast the most amazing 110 extraordinary actors in India. I like to say, ‘It’s crown and brown’. It’s not been easy. It’s the first South-Asian epic on mainstream BBC television.” Mira says that the six-hour long BBC-produced series which is budgeted at $20m is based on a book she loved and tried to acquire the rights to when it first came out. “But it was too big and too hard to adapt at that point. So, I created my own microcosmic response to the huge epic by making my own intimate ‘Monsoon Wedding’. ‘A Suitable Boy’ was the maa-baap of ‘Monsoon Wedding’. It is great to be going back to it.” Also in the works, for Mira, is an ambitious stage musical version of ‘Monsoon Wedding’, which is scheduled to premiere at London’s Roundhouse Theatre in July 2020. “I’ve spent nine years developing a huge stage musical of my film,” says Nair. “I’ve put together a great Indian cast for it. It’s a live show with singing and dancing.” Wow!
