Putting their best foot forward

Wednesday, September 05, 2018

On September 30th, some of the city’s most talented schoolchildren will come together at the Sophia Bhabha Auditorium at Breach Candy/Cumballa Hill to showcase their speech and elocution skills and compete for the Pearl Padamsee Trophy for Excellence in Speech and Drama. At the same event another bunch of children from NGOs, including those that are differently-abled, will compete separately for the CREATE Trophy for Artistic Excellence. These annual events, organised by theatre director Raell Padamsee for several years now, are Raell’s contribution in fostering an interest in the arts among the youngsters of today -- who will in all probability be the pillars of society in the tomorrow. The process of shortlisting the children was rigorous and assiduous – for the Excellence in Speech and Drama Trophy, for example, 500 applications were sieved to shortlist 200 semi-finalists. The 200 children (between the ages of 7-13) were then auditioned and a final list of 10 children, who will perform on the day, was arrived at. While the event will feature, in large part, family and well-wishers of the children concerned, a section of the seats has been opened up free-of-cost for the public. To find out more about how to attend the event, call: 9773533332.
