Supercop Celebrates

Monday, February 05, 2018

If you remember Julio Ribeiro (also known as the Supercop) you would know that he is the man who not only streamlined Mumbai’s police force during his time (and tamed the city’s notorious smuggling mafia) but also was jointly responsible for quelling the insurgency during the worst years of terror in Punjab during the Eighties. Well, there have been celebrations in the Ribeiro family in the past few weeks with the marriage of his granddaughter Alekha Engineer (d/o Nina Engineer) to the young and upcoming businessman Nibhrant Shah.

At the marriage Ribeiro mentioned that the wedding of the young couple saw the union of three communities – Hindu, Parsi and Christian -- since Alekha’s late father and Nibhrant’s late mother are Parsi. The pre-sundown wedding, at Tote, was a simple but elegant registered ceremony followed by a short Parsi ritual that involved the exchange of garlands. Julio, in his speech, quoted from the Bible and went on to elaborate how love conquers everything even as wife Melba looked on happily. A party for about 250 people followed later that night with dinner, dancing and a live band in attendance. A few days later, in her Facebook post, proud mother Nina Engineer wrote: “I have so many people to thank for making the occasion so special,” while going on to thank her relatives, friends, family as well as Alekha’s in-laws for hosting a sit-down dinner for over a 1,000 people at the wedding reception two days after the wedding ceremony!
