WE are referring to the dozens of stories appearing in various sections of the press and through online media as well, about the last hours of the unfortunate family of actor Laila Khan. Were all of them killed in the Igatpuri farmhouse? Were Laila and her sister killed in the vehicle that was bringing them to the farmhouse where the other four members of her family had been slaughtered? Did no-one try to run away? Were they so terrified that no-one even tried to escape?
A week after the ADC broke the story that they were definitely dead, setting off a feeding frenzy, it is still not entirely clear and the police keep saying that investigations will take some more time. How much more time is not clear, but then it never is!
After all, for more than a year, in spite of being given definite complaints that Laila Khan was missing by people as varied as her father and a journalist, the police chose to do absolutely nothing. And while nothing could have prevented the deaths, at least the perpetrators would have landed in police custody, rendered powerless to continue on their way, secure in the thought that they had got away with the horrific crime.
What does our mught ‘Law and Order’ imagine that giving them ‘more time’ will accomplish?
