Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
Rs. 599/-
Cast: Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Thomas Horn
Directed By: Stephen Daldry
Based on the novel by author Jonathan Safran Foer, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, is a tearjerker with a beautiful story. It’s no wonder then that it was one of the nominees for Best Picture at the 2011 Academy Awards.
Oskar (Thomas Horn) adores his father Thomas (Tom Hanks) who challenges him with puzzles and riddles, spending hours leaving puzzles for Oskar to solve. Both father and mother Linda (Sandra Bullock) are loving parents, but their world falls apart when Thomas perishes in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Now, a year after his father’s death, while rummaging his father’s closet, Oskar finds a mysterious key hidden in a vase and begins an exhaustive search for the matching lock. His only clue is the envelope that had the key labeled ‘Black’.
Who or what does the key belong to? No one knows. Oskar takes the help of the telephone directory and begins visiting numerous people with the name Black. He travels the length and breadth of New York with haversack and tambourine in hand, chatting up with strangers, meeting people his father knew, others with sad stories, all giving him the impression that everyone has a problem and that he is not alone.
Oskar has confrontations with his mom, many times blaming her for his father’s death. His grandmother (Zoe Caldwell) who lives across the road has a mysterious renter (Max Von Sydow) who appears to be dumb and can only communicate by jotting on a note pad. Despite being warned by his grandmother against meeting the old man, Oskar has a chance meeting with him and tells him his story. The renter takes a liking to Oskar and accompanies him on his quest.
Do Oskar and the renter find the lock? At the end of it all, this movie will show you how Oksar connects with his father, rebuilds his family and moves on with life.
