Amnesty in Kashmir

Saturday, July 07, 2018

IN all countries of the world, people might resort to stone pelting while the authorities are fighting the people. Nowhere, however, have they become as prominent as in Kashmir. Under the government of Mehbooba Mufti, the stone pelters had a whale of a time. The stone pelters target was the army. They had no practice in stone throwing but they learned the difficult exercise in no time at all. The army had a hard time fighting. Hundreds of them were arrested. After a short while they asked for amnesty. The chief minister was waiting for it: They were all released. And after a short while of inactivity, they began throwing  sharp stones. It became clear the chief minister of Kashmir did not want to punish people for stone pelting. Now there is a special team of woman to deal with the problem. There are stone pelters among women also. One suggestion is that women pelters are to be arrested and soon later released. What they want to do now is not to punish those who pelt stones but bring them under amnesty. The decision is not sending women stone pelters to jail. This way it is doubtful the problem can be solved. Mufti's method is better. It was timely that Mufti was dismissed. If she had continued, all young men and women would have been brought under amnesty and released.
