Cut in stone

Friday, March 09, 2018

Heroes, special people are cut in stone after their death which get installed in public places. The statues attract permanent attraction, admiration and even praise and worship. Statues are cut in emotions as well. People want to at least cherish their heroes.

People do not admire the same kind of heroes. People have different set of beliefs. Politicians, for instance, have their own different kind of heroes. There are persons who start new trends in thought. The old is forgotten and rejected. New statues keep emerging. Different areas of the country have different statues. And there are all-India statues. They are very few – like Mahatma Gandhi.

And statues get destroyed, cut to smithereens. When new heroes come, the old must go.

And there is a fight among people over attachment to statues. When, for instance, the hero in stone do not represent their chosen views, he is rejected. The statue of Lenin is not liked by all. He represents the Left, communism. Perhaps the largest number of statues broken are those of communist leaders. Conservative folks are a bit worried: His philosophy attracts quite a large number of people. Political parties want Lenin and all that he represents to go. Ambedkar promotes Dalit folks and for some he is not good. And there is Shyam Prasad Mukherjee who promotes Hinduism. Intolerance makes people smash statues.
