Alisha Mashruwala is a Partner at OnCourse and a Harvard graduate, and is also a Psychology major with a minor in Economics

I am applying for the Masters program in Data Sciences to the US later this year. Is it okay if I submit the IELTS as the English proficiency test instead of the TOEFL?
—Suramya Taneja

Most colleges in the US accept the IELTS as a part of their English proficiency test requirement. However, in recent times several colleges require only the TOEFL. For example the MS Data Science program at University of Washington, Seattle does not accept IELTS scores. Please verify with your college website and make sure that it accepts the IELTS to avoid problems at the time of your application.

I shall be applying for Undergraduate studies later this year. My parents are suggesting that I should delete my accounts from social networking sites to avoid making a negative impression on admission offices. Please advice on what I should do?
—Suhani Patel

In today’s age of social media and social networking, social media can be used to create  a strong positive impact of your profile as a part of your application. In order to make social media work in your favour, you need to make sure that your photos and content are appropriateand professional. They should highlight your extra-curricular achievements like: Hobbies, Community Service, Internships or Projects undertaken by you.  In this way, you can use your social media accounts to showcase your interests and talents. You can also use social media to reach out to current students and staff at your prospective colleges.

Aries (Mar 21 - Apr 20)Don’t give up a chance to turn an awkward situation into a profitable one. Be diplomatic with colleagues and try not giving your own views in front of others as you could send the wrong signals especially since you are delicately poised for progress.
