Alisha Mashruwala is a Partner at OnCourse and a Harvard graduate, and is also a Psychology major with a minor in Economics

I am planning to apply for undergraduate studies at Berklee College of Music. Can you please guide on the audition requirements?
—Pooja Ahuja

The audition is an important part of the application for the undergraduate program at the Berklee College of Music.  The auditon requirements will vary based on your choice of ‘Major’.  The audition will be approximately 15 minutes long and may consist of the following parts:

  • a prepared piece of your choice;
  • an improvisation over a harmonic vamp, simple-form blues, or standard tune;
  • a reading selection; and/or
  • melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic ear training exercises.
  • At the discretion of each audition team, a jam with the faculty and/or technical exercises might be part of your audition.

I have completed my 11th Grade and was planning to apply for the SMU Global Summer Programme.  What are the entry requirements for the program?
—Nakul Saluja

SMU’s (Singapore Management University) Global Summer Programme 2018 requires a minimum 1 year of university studies completed by the summer of 2018. Unfortunately it is not open to high school students. Some of the other entry requirements needed for the program are:

  • GPA (Grade Point Average) of 3.0 out of 4, or equivalent;
  • English Proficiency Test Results (TOEFL: IBT-79 minimum; IELTS-6.5 overall minimum).

I am interested in studying for a BA with Economics in the US. There are some programs that are offered by colleges while some are offered by universities. Is a college different from the university?
—Rootu Poojara

Most colleges are usually a part of a larger university. Colleges offer only undergraduate degrees while universities offer graduate degrees as well. Colleges offer a two-year degree called Associate’s Degree as well as certificates. A four-year college or university offers a bachelor's degree or Undergraduate degree. A "university" is a group of schools for studies after secondary school. At least one of these schools is a college where students receive a bachelor's degree. The other schools in a university are "graduate" (also known as "postgraduate") schools where students receive advanced degrees. Therefore, a university offers both the bachelor's degree and graduate degrees such as the master's (M.A.) and doctorate (Ph.D.).
