Alisha Mashruwala is a Partner at OnCourse and a Harvard graduate, and is also a Psychology major with a minor in Economics

My daughter will finish studying B.Com from Sydenham College of Commerce. She wants to go to the US to pursue a Master ‘s Degree.  Can she apply for admission with a 3 years undergraduate degree?
—Manisha Shivpuri

Most colleges in the US require 4 years of Undergraduate degree for admission to their Post Graduate programs. It basically means a minimum of 16 years of formal education. Colleges may allow 3 years Undergraduate degree if it has been completed in an Honours Program.  In recent time, some colleges have started accepting a 3 years degree on a case-to-case basis based on the WES evaluation. Most students applying for post graduation in the US continue with an M.Com degree in India to complete 16 years of formal education.

My son is studying in Grade 10. He is interested in studying Engineering for his Undergraduate education. His school has recommended the following subject choices: HL: Chemistry, Physics, English; SL: Math, Economics and French. Is it okay if he takes Math at the SL Level and doesn’t study Biology?
—Tanvi Patel

We would recommend that he takes Math at the HL level. Most colleges require higher level Mathematics to be eligible for engineering studies. Studying Math at the HL Level will help not only build a stronger application but will also help him during his college years. If he is only interested inEngineering, then it is acceptable not to study Physics. He can take a SAT Subject Test in Biology to aid his application.

What are the requirements for pursuing Business Management—Entrepreneurship BA in the UK?
—Jagruti Sharma

The requirements for pursuing Business Management – Entrepreneurship in the UK will differ according to the college of your choice. If you have pursued Maths, Economics and Business Studies will be beneficial. Please note that academic results are a very important aspect of admission process to UK universities. The higher your school grades, higher are your chances of admission to good colleges.

You will find that you will do well with consistent hard work. Try not to get upset by delays. In marital relationships keep calm for there could be a clash of opinion over minor issues.
