10 Ways To: Make Your Home Smell Nice

Tuesday, February 27, 2018

If you’re looking to infuse your home with more than just happiness, we have the perfect hacks. Aakriti Patni brings you 10 ways to spruce up your house with fragrances

Bake sweet treats

One of the sweeter (yes, pun intended!) ways to permeate your house with a fresh and delightful aroma is to bake delicious sweet treats. No other aroma spreads as quickly, and let’s be honest, no other smell smells that great either. At the end of the day, you’ll be left with delicious goodies and a sweet smell permeating your home. Now, that’s having your cake and eating it too!

Use scented vinegar

A great way to infuse your home with a lemony fresh smell is to use a scented vinegar solution when cleaning your home. Simply pour boiling hot vinegar over citrus peels and dried herbs and let the mixture sit for a few hours. Strain the mixture, and voila! You have a citrus-infused vinegar concoction that you can use to clean almost anything in your home.

Powder your carpets

A carpet powder works wonders for those neglected spots and the traces of dirt and smells that may be lingering within the threads of your carpets. Sprinkle the powder on your carpet, wait for a few minutes and then vacuum it up. Not only will this add a fresh smell to your home, but it will give you clean carpets as well. Using a homemade mixture of borax, baking soda and ground cloves or cinnamon is a good way to keep your carpets smelling clean and fresh.

Melt that wax

Rather than using scented candles to infuse your home with beautiful fragrances, opt for wax cubes or melts. Essentially wick-less candles, these wax cubes are as fragrant as scented candles, and don’t carry the danger of an open flame. Simply place a wax cube in a decorative warmer, and the bulb in the warmer will melt the wax and infuse your home with a wonderful aroma.

Make fragrant jars

Not only do these scented jars make great gifts, they can infuse your home with a festive aroma, too. Fill a mason jar with simmering water and add a natural ingredient of your choice. Dried oranges or apple slices, cinnamon sticks, lavender twigs or rose petals all add a fresh aroma to your home.

Bring the outside in

Indoor plants are a great way not only to infuse your home with a floral smell, but also to purify the air. They are also known to have therapeutic benefits, and add a splash of colour to our homes as well. Opt for a jasmine plant or gardenias and tea rose begonias for sweet floral smell.

Tuck away cotton balls

This is a quirky trick that will allow you to sniff whiffs of pleasure all through your house, and it works well as a quick home hack. Soak a few cotton balls in scented oil or spritz them with your favourite perfume and then tuck away these scented cotton balls into the nooks and crannies of your home — between cushions, behind the furniture or even in your vents. Just remember to change them frequently!

DIY Gel Air Freshener

They may not be the easiest to make or even the prettiest to look at, but they do wonders when it comes to infusing your home with your favourite scents. Mix 20 drops of essential oil with four cups of water, salt and gelatin. Once the mixture dissolves, pour it into a jar or a heat-safe container and allow it to harden. Place your gel air freshener in any room for a pleasant aroma.

Oil pine cones

Emitting a natural woody scent all by themselves, pine cones make for a lovely decorative addition to your home. However, since we lack natural pine cones in our city, replace them with fake ones. Arrange these pine cones in a basket and sprinkle a few drops of your favourite essential oil on them, allowing the pine cones to then emit the smell you love and fill your home with a fresh and warm scent.

Spritz that fabric

More often than not, it’s fabric-covered items in our homes that contribute to a mouldy and stale smell. No, that doesn’t mean your cushion covers and sofas are dirty or stained; they simply have lingering smells attached to them. To tackle this, buy a fabric or linen spray. Or, make one at home! Fill a small spray bottle with water, a pinch of baking soda and your favourite essential oil and spray away!
