Quick Quiz To Know Yourself

Lemon, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, sugar, cloves, aloe vera, yoghurt — the list is endless. But are they any good? Take this quiz to find out if your DIY beauty habits are potentially damaging your skin, says Anindra Siqueira

Who doesn’t love DIY beauty treatments? They are easy to prepare at home and cheap! But, they could be doing your skin (and your overall beauty!) a lot more harm than good. If your skin reacts for the worse to a DIY beauty hack, you’re likely going to stop using it. But sometimes, the harm goes unnoticed. Here’s a quiz to help you find out whether you rein in your DIY skills.

1. What is your go-to kitchen ingredient for exfoliating or for making a scrub?
a) Lemon, of course! It helps slough off dead skin, giving me a glowing complexion.
b) Honey, honey! I love how it soothes my skin. It does soothe skin, doesn’t it?

2. You’ve got a small scrape on your face and it shows. What do you reach for?
a) Hydrogen peroxide. It cleans wounds and speeds up healing, so I’ve heard.
b) The old-fashioned pairing of soap and water. What could be better!

3. You wake up to an annoying zit. You have to go out in the evening and need quick results. What do you swear by for instant de-zitification?
a) Toothpaste. Somehow it seems to dissolve pimples. And I absolutely love it!
b) I pop it. Out of sight is out of mind!

4. You have to attend a glamorous gala this evening and you want to perfect your pout for the innumerable selfies. How do you achieve this plumping of your lips?
a) I am ashamed to admit it, but I’ve used cinnamon and hot chilli for a plumping effect.
b) Plumping my what! I’ve no need for such outrageousness!

5. What home remedies do you turn to in order to keep your nails healthy?
a) I have a bottle of beer in the fridge that I keep for just such things. A beer soak is creative, I think.
b) I oil my cuticles almost every day. That keeps them healthy and glowing.

Mostly As: You may think that your DIY beauty treatments are giving you glowing and  younger-looking skin. But the truth is that they may be damaging it, and you will only see the results later in life — when it will be too late and the damage, to some extent, irreversible. Lemon is acidic and can irritate your skin, even if you don’t see inflammation immediately. Lemon juice can also make your skin more susceptible to sun damage. Toothpaste contains peroxide and baking soda, both of which are harsh on your skin. It seems that you have been falling prey to the gimmicky DIY beauty.

Mostly Bs: It seems that you follow a basic beauty routine with not many DIY hacks thrown in, and that’s probably the best thing. As with any untested formulations, DIY treatments could be damaging your skin. In the case of skin and other beauty related health, tried and tested solutions are the ones you want to stick to. Honey is soothing to the skin and doesn’t irritate it, while soap and water are the best combination when it comes to disinfecting a cut or wound. Popping pimples may not be the best solution, but oiling your cuticles regularly to keep them healthy definitely is.
