Forever Young!

Ever felt like getting a filler for a ‘forever youthful’ look? You should know about the new addition to the family. Trisha Ghoroi tells you about the one that’s been making waves recently, Bellafill

We have always been inquisitive about the secret behind our favourite celebrity’s youthful skin, given that apart from the layers of makeup and PhotoShop filters, there is something beneath their skin. Beauty, it seems, is not skin deep. We all know about Botox implants and how they help smoothen out wrinkles and age lines. But, there’s a new player in the game, one that makes bigger promises. Bellafill is a brand of dermal filler that isn’t absorbed by the body, so it doesn’t require reinjection. It comprises of bovine collagen enhanced by a microsphere substance along with a local anaesthesia called lidocaine. But, is it just a new name for Botox or is there something different about it? We tell you everything you need to know about this new filler.

How is Bellafill different from Botox?

Apart from the chemical composition, Bellafill is different than Botox in quite a few ways. To begin with, Bellafill is permanent, and unlike Botox, you don’t need to get follow-up treatments; in the case of Botox, follow-up treatments are required every three to six months. While Botox reduces muscle movement and relaxes wrinkled skin, Bellafill (it is claimed) encourages collagen growth, making skin firmer. It is pumped under the skin and replaces the collagen that your body has lost, while encouraging the growth of more collagen. The effect of Bellafill is visible in two days, whereas Botox can take three to five days to show results.

What is Bellafill used for?

We are talking about beauty treatments and getting a younger appearance, and Bellafill is supposed to take ages off your face by covering up smile lines and acne marks and smoothen out your skin. Such fillers can also be used to make your lips look fuller and give your face a firmer look. The treatment can be used by anyone over the age of 21.

Are there any side effects?

Within 24 hours of getting the treatment, you may experience side effects including redness, swelling, tenderness and itching. Some amount of this is to be expected after the treatment. The bruising that is visible after the treatment usually disappears within three to seven days. In rare cases, an allergic reaction may erupt, which is why it is advised to get an allergy test done four weeks prior to the treatment. Since the filler is permanent, the only way to remove it is by surgery.

What to know about Bellafill

  • Just like with any cosmetic procedure, using Bellafill will need you to keep a few things in mind.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol 24 hours before the treatment.
  • After getting the treatment, avoid scratching the area around the point of the injection.
  • Do not take over-the-counter medicines after getting Bellafill. Consult your doctor for a pain killer if required.
  • Avoid rigorous exercise and alcohol for at least 10 hours after treatment, as it can increase bruising.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures till the swelling or redness has reduced. It may take six to 10 hours, so stay away from hot baths.
  • Bellafill and Botox can also be used together. Botox relaxes the muscles and treating with Bellafill after a week gives more prominent results.
  • If you suffer from a fever or pain, consult your doctor immediately.
