Messy Mornings

Tuesday, December 05, 2017

Waking up with a sick feeling is hardly a good morning. Trisha Ghoroi brings you some effective remedies for morning sickness, with inputs from experts

Experiencing nausea in the morning may be the first sign of life blooming in your womb, but the feeling isn’t the best. Morning sickness is experienced by many expecting mothers and can last for about 12 to 16 weeks, which marks the first trimester of pregnancy. Dr. Bandita Sinha, gynaecologist and infertility specialist at World of Women Clinic, says, “Morning sickness is common during pregnancy. Occasional vomiting and nausea are part of morning sickness, which, unlike the name, can occur at any time of the day. It usually occurs within the first trimester, due to increased hormone levels during the initial weeks of pregnancy.” Here are a few ways to deal with the nausea. But you should know that for all the discomfort it brings, morning sickness is actually a sign that your baby is healthy.

The reason behind morning sickness

Many people believe that morning sickness may be the body’s natural defence to keep the mother from eating certain foods, that may be harmful for the developing embryo, but medical science says that might not be the case. Doctors believe that when a women conceives, her body goes through drastic hormonal changes, which leads to nausea and vomiting.

Dr. Veena Aurangabadwalla, obstetrics and gynaecology consultant at Zen Multispeciality Hospital, tells us about the hormonal change in detail. “It is suggested that the rising levels of the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), produced by the placenta, results in the swelling of the gastrointestinal tract and the crossover with TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) causing gestational thyrotoxicosis. Another possibility is that the increased levels of oestrogen and progesterone secreted by the placenta decrease gut motility, which may account for the nausea and vomiting of pregnancy,” says Dr. Veena.

Dr. Bandita tells us about a few other causes, saying, “Reduced blood sugar is another common cause of morning sickness. Fatigue, emotional stress and frequent travelling can also cause morning sickness.”

HOME REMEDIES

Since morning sickness isn’t restricted only to the early hours of the day, it can disrupt your work and home life. Here are some home remedies so that you can avoid taking prescription medicine.

Ginger

This root can be consumed in various different ways, for example in tea, warm water, soup, and can be eaten raw (if you don’t mind the sharp taste). It acts as a tummy-tamer and relieves you of nausea and vomiting within a few days.

Mint

Consuming clear mint tea can hold back the nausea. Drinking liquids keeps you hydrated and the aroma from the mint will make you feel less uncomfortable.

Sour food

Pregnant women often crave sour food and there might be a reason behind this. Sour food, in general, helps ease the feeling of nausea, so you can either bite into a lemon every now and then or carry some lemon peel with you. Even the smell of a citrus food can help prevent the feeling of nausea.

Yoga

Basic yoga exercises can benefit pregnant women when it comes to morning sickness. Breathing exercises are among the easiest and can be practised in the morning. Another effective pose is the Child Pose or Balasana.

Expert tips

Dr. Shilpa Agrawal, consultant specialist at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, shares tips to combat morning sickness

  • Sometimes pregnant women experience morning sickness that is triggered by smells or foods. Try and avoid those smells that make you feel sick.
  • Dr. Shilpa advises pregnant women not to eat spicy, fatty or fried foods. These foods can be difficult to digest and may lead to vomiting.
  • Eat dry snacks upon waking up. This suppresses the feeling of nausea. You can even munch on dry snacks throughout the day, but remember to drink water to keep yourself hydrated.
