Quick Quiz To Know Yourself

Pressure on the median nerve in your arm can cause you to lose feeling in your hand and fingers, says Pranika Sharma. Take this quiz to know if you are at risk of suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome

1.            Is your mobile the life and death of you?

                a) Yes! My phone is my life. I don’t let it out of my sight...Ever!

                b) You will never see the device in my hand for more than a few minutes at a time.

2.            Have you been unusually clumsy recently?

                a) Everything seems to be slipping out of my hands of late.

                b) I have always been clumsy. Butterfingers was my nickname.

3.            Do you often notice a swelling in your hands after you’ve worked on the computer?

                a) It feels like my hands become chubbier with every passing hour that I spend at the computer.

                b) Not really. I try not to be glued to my computer for too long.

4.            Do you have a desk job or a field job?

                a) I’m constantly seated at a computer since my work involves managing balance sheets.

                b) I hate being trapped in an office and being pinned to a desk. My work involves wandering around the city.

5.            Do your hands often ‘fall asleep’ after being in the same position for a long time?

                a) If I lean on my hand for even ten minutes, it goes numb and tingly.

                b) Not really, unless I fall asleep with my head on my hand.

6.            Do you often wake up in the morning with numbness and tingling in your hand, running up your shoulder?

                a) Yes! I wake up every morning with an ache in my arm, shoulders and back.

                b) I love mornings! I wake up fresh and energised with no aches and pains.

Mostly As: You seem to be experiencing the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). With the condition, there is a pressure on the median nerve, which passes through the bones of your wrist, due to which it starts to swell. Pain, numbness and a tingly feeling in your hand are common symptoms. Working on a computer or using a smartphone for long hours can lead to this pain, and this can affect your daily working and make you clumsy.

Mostly Bs: You might not be at risk of carpal tunnel syndrome, but it’s always better to take preventive measures. Avoid using your hands for repetitive motions such as typing and scrolling, especially for long periods. Your habit of not using the computer or a smartphone for long hours will benefit you in the long run. Don’t strain your wrists any more than you need to.
