Pilates is a trend that is catching up with fitness lovers, says Ruchi Kishore

When you're looking to find how to tone your body effectively and efficiently, look no further than Pilates. Pilates is a wonderful toning and strength training method that is good for people of all fitness levels and abilities. If you do Pilates several times a week, you're bound to see results within a couple of months.

Developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, Pilates lays stress on strengthening the body rather than just losing weight. It is a new trend catching up, especially among Indian women who are moving to Pilates rather than the usual gym workouts.  A Pilates workout helps one to improve the physical strength, flexibility, postural alignment and stability.

Not only that, Pilates also allows a person to stretch, strengthen and tone muscles without experiencing excessive pain. It plays an important role in helping people develop mental and physical strength. However, it must be practiced in a structured order with a proper instructor.

Pilates is done with the help of some key machines and one of them is The Pilates Reformer. It is a type of exercise machine that brings together all the exercise techniques of Pilates and turning them into an intense workout that targets the whole body. The workout machine utilises leverage, body weight, and springs to create resistance. The Pilates Reformer stimulates several muscle groups or a specific muscle group alike. The Pilates Reformer is meant to increase resistance to the movement to tone and sculpt the physique.

The benefits

Pilates provides a concentric and eccentric contraction of muscles at the same time. This means while one side of the body is working, the other side is getting stretched out, which leads to balanced muscle development.

Pilates can be practiced by anyone from age 10-100! Modifications and variations can be done for those with certain conditions.

Pilates can be practiced throughout your pregnancy! (Disclaimer: You must either already be practicing Pilates or doing some form of exercise before the pregnancy.)

Pilates works on the inner core unit – a set of four muscles that lie deep in the abdominal and lower back area which gives the spine stability therefore preventing the common lower back disc issues we see today.

Pilates improves breathing. The focus and purpose of breathing well with Pilates is important, not only to isolate your abdominal muscles and pelvic floor, but also to create trunk and body awareness. The breathing helps to relax tight, tense muscles, relieve tension and help the mind to focus on the body. Breathing also increases oxygen uptake, improving the immune system and facilitate learning fine motor control to improve co-ordination and help isolate specific muscles, particularly in the trunk throughout your abdominals.
