The arrest of three Kolkata men for the rape of a woman has wrong-footed the West Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, who blamed the victim saying that it was fabricated story! The victim was gang-raped at gunpoint in a moving car after she was picked up from a night club. Despite the horrifying crime, the state government and the police went on to display blatant callousness towards the victim. The very government which is headed by a woman is so insensitive towards crimes against women.
By blaming the victim and her character, the ruling party has displayed social prejudices of the previous government. Mamata must take this matter seriously and see to it that the rapists must be punished.
