Number game in the North-East

Monday, March 05, 2018

The Congress, wiped out in Tripura and Nagaland, has not given up hope of forming a government in Meghalaya, but is wary of a Manipur-like situation where it emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly elections last year. But the party lost seven MLAs to the BJP that cobbled up an alliance government. Marking its ascendancy in the North east, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Tripura Assembly elections, ending the 25-year reign of the CPI(M), and put itself in a position to form an alliance government in Nagaland. For the BJP, the victory in Tripura has been the sweetest after a bitter territorial battle with the deeply-entrenched Left Front, led by the CPI(M). While Tripura gave a clear result, the verdicts in Meghalaya and Nagaland were fractured, but the number game still holds key in North east and it is time to form a government with coalition partners by hook or crook.

The biggest news of the North-east elections is Tripura, where the BJP seems to be coming to power with a clear lead after an initial neck and neck race. In Meghalaya, the picture is not that much clear, though the ruling Congress emerged as the single largest party ahead of the NPP and its ally BJP. In Nagaland also, the BJP emerged victorious with 30 seats. This is the beginning of a new era for the people of Tripura under the leadership of Modi and this state will prosper with developments all over. The big win for BJP was in Tripura, which ended the 25 year rule of the CPI (M). It was a shot in the arm for both party president, Amit Shah and PM Modi, to hit the jackpot with perfect understanding and calculation. BJP is set to form the government with an ally in Nagaland and despite its low numbers, remained a strong contender for power in Meghalaya. The Modi magic continues to rule the roost in elections to states and a win in the North-east is a new house order indeed.
