It is a matter of grave concern that the traffic mishaps account for a majority of accident deaths, with over 1,500 casualties on Mumbai-Goa highway, against 6,664 accidents during last six years.
Driving on Mumbai Goa road has traditionally been a picturesque and colourful experience. But over the year, the holiday drive along the Konkan coast has become a death trap due to the unsafe condition on NH17.
The close frequency of road accident symbolises the mortal danger luring on our roads. Road accidents arise due to a plethora of factors, including reckless and negligence driving, terrible state of roads, unclear garbage and other obstacles strewn all over the place, bridges with insufficient shouldering and protection, lack of supervision by traffic police, understaffing, poor training and insufficient powers for enforcement of rules.
It needs to be relished by everyone that adhering to safety precautions and caring for other road users costs nothing. Yet it could help preventing ghastly tragedies.
