School racket article

Wednesday, July 26, 2017

"Scamming school racket (ADC July 19). The fact that the Bhandup school is overcharging for text books and making outrageous financial demands on its students - many of whom come from lower middle class families - should not come as a surprise to anyone. Virtually all schools are being run as a business these days. And not just schools. Hospitals grossly overcharge for medicines, implants and other services. The list goes on. One of the most shameful truths about our India is that the notion of serving society has virtually disappeared among our institutions. People have long grown accustomed to their political "leaders" lining their own pockets at the expense of citizens they have been elected to serve. But the disease has spread everywhere. The article poses a very pertinent question "Who will stand up to make sure that education does not end up as another profit making scam for the innocent citizen?' The simple answer is: no one. Most of these malpractices take place because the very persons who are supposed to monitor and keep a check on them are more than willing to turn a blind eye - for suitable remuneration of course. This is a fact of life in our Bharat Mahan.
