Sridevi: Immortal, Flawless and Distinguished

Wednesday, February 28, 2018

It was really distressful to know that Bollywood actress Sridevi passed away on Saturday night after a cardiac arrest in Dubai. The actress won the hearts of millions of people all over the world with  films like Chandni, Lamhe, Chaalbaaz, Mr. India, Nagina and many more in the 1990s. She had started her career as a child artiste, and grew up to be one of the biggest female stars India has ever had. Her last performance was the 2017 film ‘Mom’, where she played a woman seeking vengeance after her stepdaughter is raped. Sridevi lived her life in a fantastic way and she really gave a tremendous face to the Bollywood film industry. I think our media is trying to create a sensation in her death which appears to be natural. The Dubai Police should not let out any news out of the country until and unless the entire investigation is over and the body of the deceased (Sridevi) is given to her family.

The actress Sridevi died after she fainted and drowned in the bathtub of her hotel room, as per the Dubai government statement and handed over the case to a prosecution magistrate. A document that was variously described as a forensic report as well as a death certificate by media outlets in Dubai had earlier said her death was due to "accidental drowning''. A blizzard of speculation kept many Indians hooked to television screens where conflicting versions exploded by the hour. At one point, it was reported that Sridevi's husband Boney Kapoor was questioned for 18 hours and then cleared to leave the police station. Soon, a Dubai newspaper rubbished the version, saying only a testimony was taken from him on Sunday morning. The purported forensic report or death certificate uploaded by the media in Dubai, which cited accidental drowning as the cause of death, had a stamp of the "Ministry of Health UAE" and the director of preventive medicine, Dubai, Dr Sami Wadie. The document also mentions the actress's full name, "Sridevi Boney Kapoor Ayyappan", her passport number and the date of the incident. Family sources were quoted as saying on Sunday that Sridevi, 54, suffered a "cardiac arrest" - which cannot be disputed because all deaths involve a cardiac arrest that is different from a heart attack. The causes of a cardiac arrest can be multiple. At least one relative had suggested a "heart attack" but Dubai police made no such mention. Unconfirmed reports in the Dubai media said the autopsy had found traces of alcohol in her blood. The Sridevi death mystery is only deepening by the hour.

Sridevi is immortal and even in her death remains an enigma in the film industry. Mr.India, Moonrampirai, Jagadekha veerudu athiloka sundari, English Vinglish, Kshanam Kshanam and Mom and other innumerable films. The film Moondram Pirai is a classic example that proves her histrionic abilities. Her innocence secured  a national award for her brilliant acting. It will be difficult to fill the void created by her in the near future. Range is a word often used to describe the actor’s prowess. Drama, emotions, dance, comedy and even action. There was nothing she was not proficient at. The ultimate in feminine beauty and grace and graceful right until the graveyard.
Rare to see a Tamilian actress conquering the entire Bharat by her charm. She was not only an excellent, beautiful and talented actress, the yesteryear "Dancing Queen" of the Bollywood Film Industry. Her contributions and achievements in Indian Film Industry will be remembered forever.  Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family friends and fans. Her name will be a glory that remains always.

Beauty at what cost? Shocking twist in Sridevi's death and even the Dubai police is confused of the real cause of her death; it could be death naturally, accidentally or by Murder. The Dubai police, which is very efficient is not taking any chances and one can expect a fair investigation in the murder mystery as the Gulf destination is know for its tough legal procedures. The case would have been botched up in India or taken years to solve. But the cause of her death too is important and the guilty has to be punished if any wrongdoing is found in her death. 54 is too young an age to die and Sridevi's sudden death has even left the medical fraternity perplexed about the real cause that triggered cardiac arrest which the actress suffered in spite of her being healthy. Cosmetic surgeries to look young and beautiful is very common among film stars as they are in the business of entertainment where looks matter and are responsible for their survival in their profession. Steroids and other life threatening drugs are administered into the body and surgeries that can prove fatal in the long run. Women these days or for that matter men as well take food supplements for weight loss to remain slim which is dangerous. Beauty at what cost is a pertinent question that comes into everybody's mind at times of such tragedies but soon forgotten till another such death happens in future. Sridevi's untimely death should act as an eye-opener for people who abuse their body to look young. Being healthy from within is more important than looking beautiful in appearance!

Sridevi’s death has traumatised not only the film fraternity and Indian Cinema but the entire world. Her death message on early Sunday morning came like a shocking wake up call. She was the first female superstar who redefined style and glamour in Bollywood. She was endowed with rare talents and grace in dance. Chaalbaaz exposed her dancing prowess. Her legions of fans spread all over the world couldn’t believe their eyes that she was no more. She was much loved by the millions for her roles in  “Chandni”, “Mr. India” and “Himmatwalla”. Like the evergreen Dev Anand, her death was destined in a foreign country. The 54-year-old, who had taken a long break from the arc lights following her marriage to Boney Kapoor, had returned to the silver screen six years ago with "English Vinglish" and worked in three films since. Sridevi collapsed in Dubai’s posh Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel, on Saturday evening and a medical team was unsuccessful in reviving her.
Her end came a day prior to the 35th anniversary of her Jeetendra co-star “Himmatwala”. It was a massive cardiac arrest. It will be very difficult for her legions of fans, her co-stars, and the film fraternity to forget her. The unexpected demise of the star who ruled the commercial space and did significantly much-admired films "Sadma" and "Lamhe" was specially distinguished for her flawless timing as a comedienne. She will be in the workbook of Indian cinema. Sridevi was a complete actor in her own right, flawless and distinguished.

Padma Shri winner Sridevi was a versatile actress and a dancer with impeccable timing. Her dance in the song from film Chandni "Mere Haathon Mein Nau Nau Chudiyyan Hai" will be remembered by her fans forever. Sridevi was born on April 13, 1963, a day before Tamil New Year day, and passed away on February 24, birth anniversary of another legendary actress Dr.Jayalalithaa. Both were reigning queens in their era!
