Union budget & Bhama Vijayam song

Friday, February 02, 2018

Finance Minister R.K. Shanmukham Chetty presented the first budget of independent India on 26 November 1947. Dave Ramsey said “A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” Whether it's the Finance Minister announcing budget for nation or the lady of the house (Home Minister) planning budget for home, a budget helps plan and manage your money and also shows you how to allocate money, presenting the choices you can opt for based on your financial limitations. It saves us from overspending and also from getting into the debt trap.

One can relate the budget with a Tamil song – 'Varavu yetana selavu pathana athigam rendanna kadaisiyil thunthana thunthana thunthana' (you Earn 8 annas, spend 10 annas, you exceed by 2 and you are in trouble) – from the movie 'Bhama Vijayam'.

Interesting facts about the Budget:
FM Arun Jaitley couldn't break the record of presening the longest budget speech, a record held by Jawant Singh, who clocked 2 hrs, 13 minutes in 2003.

Pranab Mukherje's 1982 budget speech lasted 95 minutes and Indira Gandhi said 'the shortest finance minister has delivered the longest budget speech' (at the time).

However first budget speech of independent India presented on 26 November, 1947 was only 39 paragraphs long.
