It’s time to let the goodness of citrus work its magic on your skin. Pearl Mathias tells you about the benefits of vitamin C and how to incorporate it into your beauty routine
When you think of vitamin C, you think about fighting a cold and the flu or boosting immunity. But, this anti-oxidant helps with a range of beauty troubles as well. Whatever your skin type or anti-ageing concern is, this underrated ingredient provides a broad spectrum of benefits. And, although you can consume the fruit or juice to reap these benefits from inside out, several beauty products are now using vitamin C as their main ingredient. Here’s why this vitamin is essential for your skincare routine.
Vitamin C is known as a brightener and it’s essential when it comes to skincare. But, there are a host of other benefits that it offers. We asked Shikhee Agrawal, head of training at The Body Shop; Sheetal Dodani, marketing head at Zooty; Aakriti Kochar, beauty and makeup expert at Oriflame India; and experts from Revlon to shed some light on its benefits.
Antidote for ageing
Bid adieu to fine lines, wrinkles and dull skin by incorporating vitamin C in your daily anti-ageing skincare ritual. A powerful anti-oxidant, it boosts collagen production, making your skin firm and even-toned.
The free-radical fighting properties in vitamin C help protect your skin from damage caused by harmful UV rays. So, it acts like a mild natural sunscreen.
Freedom from pollution
When added to your daily skincare routine, well-formulated products that contain vitamin C helps even out your skin tone, shielding your skin from the impact of pollution, improving hydration and leaving it looking supple.
An anti-acne agent
Vitamin C is a popular anti-inflammatory agent and has proven to be much more effective than most other easily available solutions in the market. Vitamin C balances the pH of your skin, preventing breakouts, redness and rosacea.
Dealing with skin dullness? Vitamin C also helps to brighten your skin tone and is great for treating pigmentation issues. It reduces scars and darkness within a few months of continuous use. In fact, this nutrient can even slow down the production of melanin.
Vitamin C helps in building collagen, which is important for hair growth. But, it isn’t enough to simply have long hair. This vitamin also helps in the absorption of iron, which keeps your locks strong and healthy. It also helps impart a lustrous texture to your hair and its deficiency can lead to dry hair and split ends.
The vitamin also helps to maintain your nails by strengthening the skin, connective tissue, bones and walls of your blood vessels. As long as you make sure not to cut your nails too short or file them too close to your skin, the vitamin will help strengthen your nails and promote growth.
Vitamin C can be obtained from citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruits and strawberries as well as vegetables like broccoli, potatoes and tomatoes. So, you can use them straight from your kitchen. Try these DIY solutions.
Shikhee says: Make a vitamin C serum at home by mixing vitamin C powder and filtered water in a bowl. Once dissolved, stir in aloe vera gel and vitamin E oil. Allow the serum to cool for a week or two in the refrigerator before using it.
Sheetal says: Mix a teaspoon each of organic honey, freshly squeezed lemon juice and lavender oil, and massage it on to your face for a minute in a gentle, circular motion. Leave it on for half an hour, and clean it off with warm water and a wash cloth.
Aakriti says: Prepare a mask at home with sun-dried orange peels. Crush the dried peels to make a powder. Mix this powder well with milk and honey. Stir well to prepare a mask and apply on your face and neck. You can also use this as an anti-tanning pack. Leave it on for 15 minutes and gently scrub off with cold water.
