We’re sure you’ve dreamt of living in a home much like that of your favourite celebrity. Now, you can get the look! Pearl Mathias talks to designer Ashiesh Shah about his show DESIGN HQ, which gives you a sampling of how that might feel

Have you ever flipped through pages of a glossy magazine that showcase picture-perfect images of celebrity homes and wondered what might have been if only you had come across them when you were redecorating? Fox Life’s new series brings you just that! DESIGN HQ will give you a never-seen-before inside access to the homes of Bollywood A-listers such as Hrithik Roshan, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Pernia Qureshi, Suzanne Roshan, AD Singh and Sabina Singh, among many others, which is sure to ignite your design spark. It will reveal customised, out-of-the-box design inspirations behind celebrity home interiors, along with some candid and fun conversations with Ashiesh Shah on all things design. The show also features a fun DIY segment, where Ashiesh shares simple design hacks and tips on how to design your own space to make it just like the celebrities! We caught up with the designer to find out about the show. Here’s what he had to say.

Tell us a little about yourself and your design style.
My practice has evolved over the years, and with it my philosophy on aesthetics. What has remained constant, however, is my belief in aesthetic philosophy of Wabi-sabi, the Japanese concept derived from Buddhist teachings. It is the aesthetic of a beauty that is imperfect and incomplete.

Asymmetry and asperity play a major role in my practice. I appreciate spaces that incorporate natural objects and processes, and I try to maintain this principle in my own practice. Nothing is permanent, nothing is finished and nothing is perfect.

When did you realise that you wanted to pursue interior design as a career?
I was always fascinated by architecture and design, and painting was just something I did since before I can remember. I can’t remember a day from my childhood when I wasn’t doodling on a piece of paper or using things around me to create interesting objects. I come from a family of doctors, so when it came to making that big career decision, medicine seemed like the way to go. When I was studying dentistry, I realised quite early on that it wasn’t something I felt passionately about. It didn’t allow the kind of free thinking and creativity that you find in fields such as architecture and design. I needed to be creating something and architecture seemed like the right choice. With time, I became more interested in design-based practices.

Tell us about the show DESIGN HQ.
DESIGN HQ is all about decoding how to get the perfect interiors for your home. The show brings forth a creative facet of lifestyle for viewers — design and home décor. In addition to some great DIY tips, the show also takes viewers into the homes of their favourite celebrities.

What can the audience expect?
DESIGN HQ is all about decoding how you can ‘design your own space’ and I’m looking forward to really breaking down the design process for viewers. At the end of every episode, I’ll share interesting design hacks and tricks inspired by the celebrity home I visit to help them create the look!

Give us three reasons why we shouldn't miss the show.
1) With DESIGN HQ, we’re really trying to decode design and help viewers get the perfect interiors for their homes.

2) We’re giving out some super DIY tips and design hacks to help make the whole design process much easier.

3) We’re taking viewers into the homes of some really interesting personalities, from actors Hrithik Roshan, Aditya Roy Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez to renowned fashion designers Masaba, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla.

Tell us a little about your experiences filming the show.
In retrospect, making the show was a hectic and time-consuming process. I have never done television before, and since I was shy as a child, making an entire show that rested on my shoulders was a journey of self-discovery. It is one thing designing homes for celebs, but it’s a different ball game when you walk into their home with cameras and a huge crew. Fortunately, all my guests were extremely gracious and welcoming when they opened their stunning homes to us. And, we had fun shooting every episode.

I had to undergo rigorous training and rehearsals to ensure that the shoots went seamlessly without any delays as we had very limited time with everyone. Overall, it was a pleasure working with Condé Nast and Fox Life. It was a collaborative project that was fun yet challenging. I hope that all the effort we put in to make the show gives viewers what they like.

Any funny incident from the sets that you’d like to share with us?
It’s hard to pick a favourite, and we did so much more than just talk! From a game of Pool between Aditya and me, to Jaqueline attempting to teach me how to pole dance, I’ve had some fantastic times!

When: Thursdays, at 10pm

Where: Fox Life
