There’s more to hair than just combing it every day and keeping it clean. Khevna Pandit tells you how to identify the texture of your hair and choose the right products for it

If there’s one thing we know as women, it is that hair care is an important part of our grooming ritual. While we’re constantly being told to embrace our natural hair, we’re often not too fond of it. So, we don’t blame you if you get your beautiful curls straightened out or your super straight hair permed. And, without the right products, your hair can turn into something unmanageable and frustrating. But what most don’t realise is that the very products that we use to keep our hair looking good could be damaging it and making it look worse in the long run. If you’re wondering how to manage your hair, we’ve got a few tips. The first step is to determine the volume and texture of your hair. Only then can you begin to tackle the problem.

Step 1: Determining the volume of your hair
It is important to know how dense your hair is if you are to decide on a well-suited cut and style. Determining how much volume your hair has is not all that difficult. Here’s what you have to do:

1. Part your hair in the middle while looking into a mirror.

2. Grab hold a chunk of your hair firmly so you can see the roots and take a good look at your hair.

3. If you barely see your scalp at all, you have thick or very dense hair. If you can see some of your scalp, your hair is of medium density. If too much of your scalp shows, it means that you have thin hair.

4. Repeat this estimation on another spot of your scalp to do double check.

Step 2: Determining the texture of your hair
In order to protect your hair from damage done by hair treatments and products, it is imperative that you know the texture of your hair. Damage may include frayed or split ends, thinning and even hair fall. Here’s how to figure out the texture of your hair:

1. Wash your hair using your regular shampoo and conditioner. Make sure you do this at a time when you’re not sweating excessively and have not indulged in high intensity exercise.

2. Allow your hair to air dry.

3. Run your fingers through your hair after a while.

4.  Check the following:

  • Oily or greasy hair: Does your hair get flat as the day progresses? This could be due to an oily or greasy scalp. Here’s the test: If your hair feels slimy between your fingers despite the hair wash, you probably have greasy hair.
  • Rough or dry hair: Rough or dry hair lacks the lustre and sheen that healthy locks normally possess. If you have trouble putting your fingers through your hair and you come out with broken strands, you probably have dry hair.
  • Smooth and silky hair: If you have no trouble running your fingers through your hair, your hair is most likely normal and healthy.

Step 3: Maintaining your hair
Now that you’ve found out your hair type and texture, here are a few products you can use to tackle your hair woes.

Oily or greasy hair:
A little oil or grease is normal, but using the wrong products can lead to an oil imbalance on your scalp and cause it to become greasy. Use a mild shampoo and make sure to rinse thoroughly. No residue should be left behind after you’ve washed your hair.

What we recommend Use L’Oreal Professionnel Expert Serie Sensi Balance Shampoo (Rs 575), which has Sorbitwin formulae to mildly cleanse your hair.

Dry or damaged hair: Too many perms or straightening jobs can ruin your hair’s texture. If you suffer from dry hair, you have to keep it moisturised. Don’t apply high heat to your hair and use a leave-in conditioner while going out swimming or to the beach to protect your tresses.

What we recommend Moroccanoil Hydrating Conditioner (Rs 1,800) is a sulfate and paraben-free product that deep conditions your hair and equips it with essential minerals.

Healthy or normal hair:
If your hair is healthy, it will also be thick. Make sure you use the right shampoo. Also, don’t change the product you use often. If your current shampoo suits you best, make sure that you use a coin-sized amount and that you rinse thoroughly so that you’re not left with a greasy scalp.

What we recommend Use Tresemme Spa Rejuvenation Nourish & Revive Shampoo (Rs 273), which is formulated with hydrating marine minerals to cleanse your hair and leave it thick and shiny.
