If you’re one of the lucky few who has a grand (or rustic) mantelpiece in your home, Khevna Pandit has a few quick tips to help you deck it up

We know, with our climate, you may never use your glorious mantel (if you actually have a home with one in the city), but we’re specifically talking about those homes away from home. If your weekend or holiday home came with a mantelpiece, you might never have had the chance to use it, but there’s no reason that it has to be a blank canvas. Since fireplaces have a way of grabbing the attention in a room, you should get your creative juices flowing to decorate the space that you’ve been ignoring. Whether it is a dramatic stoneware piece or a sleek modern design, if you’re looking for a place to get started, we’re dishing out a few fancy ways to prep up your mantel. Read on for easy and fun tips.

The magic of overlapping art
Overlapping artwork can make any mantelpiece stand out. However, the key here is to know the exact dimensions of the artwork you will be using. While positioning your favourite artwork, don’t clutter up the display. You will score points if you choose simple art. We suggest pastel-coloured paintings for a soothing effect.

Colour coordinate accessories
Choosing the right palette is important if you are decorating your mantelpiece. If you’ve settled upon a mix of accessories, make sure the shades complement each other. Anchor the mantel with a larger accessory such as a lamp or a vase, and pick objects in colours that are present in other elements of the room. If the colours white, pastel blue and gold dominate the walls of the room in which the fireplace stands, decorate your mantel with a healthy mix of these hues.

Traditional touch
Who says you have to meticulously arrange accessories on your mantelpiece? Pick out traditional wall hangings and pin them on the sides of your mantel, or stand long, tapering vases at either side. You can even mount candle sticks on either side for a vintage, old-worldly charm. However, keep things symmetrical and choose similarly shaped objects, or you might just end up with a messy wall.

Create a mood board
The art above your fireplace can say a lot about you. Take this as an opportunity to put up paintings that are related to the colour theme of your house. In this case, the size of your art should be similar to that of your fireplace. If you have a small piece of art, pair it with other, small artwork and try and balance out the shades in each. Pick out your favourite paintings and put them up according to your mood each month. There’s no end to what you can achieve.

Light up your mantel
The easiest way to decorate a blank mantelpiece is to illuminate it with lights. Twirl up fairy lights and use tea cup candles to create a mystifying border to your mantelpiece. You can also put up a round mirror above your mantel to make the room seem like it has more light than it actually does. Pick small accessories like baubles and showpieces to complement them.
