Lokayukta attack: Rajnath speaks to K'taka CM
HOME Minister Rajnath Singh today spoke to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and expressed concern over the attack on the state Lokayukta. Officials said the chief minister apprised Singh about the incident and the condition of the Lokayukta, P Vishwanatha Shetty. They added that the home minister wished Justice Shetty a speedy recovery. Shetty was stabbed multiple times today and left bleeding profusely by a man, who had gone to his office with a complaint, only to be told that the case was shut.

Cabinet hikes dearness allowance to 7 pc
The Union Cabinet today increased the dearness allowance (DA) for its 11 million employees and pensioners to 7 per cent, from 5 per cent, from January 1, 2018. "The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its approval to release an additional instalment of Dearness Allowance (DA) to Central Government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) to pensioners from January 1, 2018 representing an increase of 2 per cent over the existing rate of 5 per cent of the Basic Pay/Pension, to compensate for price rise," an official statement said.

Jaitley to contest RS polls from UP: BJP
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will contest the Rajya Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh while Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will do so from Madhya Pradesh, the BJP's central election committee announced today. Jaitley is currently a Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat and Pradhan is a member from Bihar. The party today announced the names of seven Union ministers and one general secretary for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls in various states.

Railways planning ramps, other amenities for disabled: Minister
A day after activists met Railway Minister Piyush Goyal demanding that the rail network be made more disabled friendly, the government today told Parliament it was augmenting amenities at stations to help those with special needs. Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain told the Lok Sabha that the ministry has planned several amenities such as standard ramps for a barrier free entry and non-slippery walkways. at stations. The amenities include at least two special parking spots, one washroom on the ground floor, at least one drinking water tap suitable for use by persons with disabilities and a "May I help you" booth, he said.  "Railways has provided 467 escalators at 171 railway stations and 318 elevators at 134 railway stations for senior citizens and the disabled. Provision of amenities at stations, including those for persons with disabilities and elderly passengers, is a continuous process," the minister said.
