Lokpal Bill sent to Rajya Sabha select committee
NEW DELHI: The much-awaited Lokpal Bill was on Monday sent to a select committee of the Rajya Sabha soon after being taken up in the House after a gap of more than four months. Even as Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley questioned if the government wanted to pass the Lokpal bill at all and amidst mixed opinions from various parties, the Upper House passed a motion to send the bill to a select committee.
Yeddyurappa charge sheeted in land case
BANGALORE: Former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa was on Monday charge sheeted in a land case, further weakening him in his battle to unseat his successor D.V. Sadananda Gowda. The BJP leader in Karnataka has been charged with "criminal misconduct as public servant" to cause a loss of over Rs.80 million to the state government.
Four held for murder of Karnataka officer
BANGALORE: Four people have been detained in connection with the murderous attack on a Karnataka officer who is believed to have exposed land scams in house-building cooperative societies, state Home Minister R. Ashoka said on Monday. S.P. Mahantesh, a Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) officer, died in a hospital on Sunday after being brutally assaulted on the night of May 15 in Bangalore city centre.
Charge-framing in Aarushi case today
GHAZIABAD: A court yesterday deferred till Tuesday the charge-framing against dentist couple Nupur and Rajesh Talwar in the case relating to the murder of their teenaged daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj after the accused pleaded lack of preparation for arguments. The couple’s advocate filed an application before the Additional District Judge of CBI special court Shyam Lal contending that the investigating agency has handed over 6,000 pages of documents to them only a day before and they are not prepared for arguments against the chargeframing.
Two terror suspects held with RDX in Punjab
NAWANSHAHR (Punjab): An attempt by terrorists to strike in Punjab was foiled with the arrest of two Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) militants and recovery of three kg RDX and other arms, police said on Monday. Patiala range Inspector General Paramjit Singh Gill said terror suspects Sandeep Singh of Jalandhar and Sukhwinder Singh of Khanna were arrested on Sunday. Gill said the mastermind of the plan was terrorist Gurnek Singh, suspected to be based in the US. He said that further investigations would reveal where the terrorists wanted to strike.
