Mumbai's crumbling structures!
Around 15,000 old buildings in Mumbai – 'the Maximum City' are in a complete dilapidated condition. However, these buildings are yet to be vacated by the residents as they prefer to risk their lives in buildings that may fall any time. The residents in these dangerous structures are scared to move far from where they have lived for years, and where they feel they may never be able to return in their lifetime. Many residents do not vacate even after being served several notices. Most dilapidated buildings are in the South Mumbai areas, the list of the dilapidated buildings issued by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) also consists of structures from suburban places like Ghatkopar and Mulund. Around 1,000 dilapidated buildings have been repaired and 3,000 have been repaired by their owners in a decade.
The Afternoon D&C photographer Santosh Gupta captures these crumbling residential structures.
