Tired of the old, plain and boring dresser in your room? Then it’s time to make some changes, writes Prerna Pandey
Not only will some strategic changes give your dresser the much-needed makeover, it will also uplift your bedroom’s look by several notches.
There are so many things one can do to give his/her dresser a new look; the first being, painting the drawers of a dresser.
For example, if you have a plain white coloured dresser, painting the drawers in a multi-coloured mishmash of paints will give it a very bright and attractive look.
Like, for instance, when 14-year-old Maheep Singh got bored with the plain white colour of her dresser, she got her friends to help her to make it look pretty and all decked up.
“I got colour spray cans and asked my friends to draw/write whatever they felt like on the drawers with as many colours as they wanted. My friends made a whole lot of cartoons, wrote personalised message, put their handprint impressions on the drawers too. So, now I have an amazing looking dresser with memories attached to it that I want to preserve for ever,” says Maheep.
Another very interesting design for dressers would be to paint the drawers and then paint the content of the drawers on the outside.
Like, for instance, if you have the first drawer of your dresser filled with your shirts and t-shirts, then draw stacked shirts and t-shirts on the outside of the drawers or draw your favourite t-shirt’s image on the outside.
You can continue with this pattern on all the drawers. For a more genuine look, you can also paint pictures that look like your shirts are spilling over from your messy drawers.
Decoupage! This can be a really fun to do. You can cut out pictures of your favourite artists, actors, dresses, stick it randomly on your dresser and paint a coat of varnish over it.
Making a collage of art work is a favourite amongst many home owners and covering it with varnish would mean extending the life of your art work.
“I did decoupage on my chairs’ backrest and really liked the idea. That is when I decided that doing the same for my boring old dresser would look really cool,” says second year B.A. student Aarti Sharma.
Wall-papering and painting the dresser is another option you can look at. Both the options won’t take much of your time and you have lots of variables to explore in these areas.
So, if the background (wall) of the dresser has printed wallpaper with patterns then choosing a plain wallpaper/paint will be a better option and vica versa.
If you want a makeover for the dresser without doing much, you could simply write down, in letters and words, the contents of the drawers on it.
Like, you can mark one drawer for shirts, other for trousers, a third for ties/other accessories and so on.
You can also get decorative, colourful letters from a stationary shop and stick them on your dresser drawers. This could help you in case you want to remove them at a later date when you may want to interchange, say the shirts drawer with the trousers’ one.
Just like these, there are many options waiting for you for you to explore and help lend a brand new look to the dresser.
So, go ahead and take your pick!
