With monsoon on its way, fear of mosquitoes and other insects is already bothering homeowners. Bug sprays and disinfectants are the need of the hour as it is better to be prepared for the worse. There are myriads of disinfectants and sprays you can get from a local store. But, is using all these chemical products safe for you and your family? Especially when there are pets or children at home, it is better to steer clear of these chemical products as most of these are not safe to use with pets or kids at home however effective they might be.
If you think that there is poor little you can do, you are underestimating the power of your own kitchen! Things you use for everyday cooking and other purposes, things you can avail right from your kitchen can be very effective for making homemade, natural and chemical-free disinfectants and insect repellent. Here is a list of things you can use to make your own insect repellants and disinfectants that are safe for children and pets too.
Get rid of those blood-sucking parasites! Mosquitoes are our biggest enemy across seasons but they multiply a lot faster in monsoon than in other seasons here is how you can deal with them – Mosquitoes cannot stand the smell of garlic. Crush a garlic pod and mix it in water to make your own garlic repellant. The number of buds you use depends entirely on you but if you use more buds it will give off a pungent smell. So, use accordingly.
A mixture of essential oils and carrier oil or alcohol works best against mosquitoes and is the easiest to prepare. There are a few essential oils that works well against mosquitoes. You could use cinnamon oil, lemon eucalyptus oil, castor oil etc., and for the carrier oil try any cooking oil, olive oil, sun flower oil etc., for alcohol, you can use vodka as a carrier. Use this to spray on your clothing or your body to avoid mosquitos.
‘Pep’per it up
Ants and other small insects crawling all around your house can drive you crazy. But there is an easy solution to deal with this menace without having to touch the spray can. Heat 2-3 cups of water till it boils, add half or 2/3 of a cup of hot pepper in the boiling water and let it simmer for few minutes. Now, strain out the pepper and fill the liquid in a spray bottle and use when necessary. This solution is for outdoor use. Spray it around your house and where you keep plants as this is the main source of ants coming in your house.
Odourless and germ-free floor
For your own homemade disinfecting floor cleaner, all you will need is water, vinegar and lemon juice. Warm half a bucket of water (enough swab your floor) and add half a cup of white vinegar and two tablespoon of lemon juice and you’re ready to go. It’s the best, cheap and safe all-purpose cleaner for your home.
Drive’ em away
Citrus oil is the best mosquito repellent. In fact, it repels a wide range of insects. All citrus oils have a compound D- limonene which acts against these insects. Drip some on your furniture or squirt in your house and see the effect. You can also directly apply it on your body or spray it on your clothing.
