With the kitchen being such a high activity area of the house, it’s worth finding out how to design a kitchen – even if you’re using a kitchen designer or architect

How to design a kitchen? Knowing what’s involved in the process will help you design your own kitchen or give a detailed brief to your designer.
Deciding on a layout for a kitchen is probably the most important part of kitchen design. It's the layout of the kitchen—and not its colour or its style— that determines how easy it is to cook, eat and socialise in the kitchen. At the most basic level, the layout addresses the placement of the appliances, the sink(s), the cabinets, the counters, the windows and doors, and furniture such as a kitchen table and chairs

Kitchen platforms
Kitchen platforms can be in various shapes. You may prefer two separate platforms, or one long 'L' or 'C' shaped platform. In today's small urban houses, the kitchen sometimes doubles up as an additional multipurpose area where a small breakfast table could prove very useful. An open plan for a kitchen is another way of making a small, enclosed space look bigger. This layout integrates the kitchen and the persons working in it with the rest of the house and its activities so that they do not feel left out. By providing a counter for serving/eating with storage below and sliding shutters above, you can make your kitchen simultaneously of a dual plan, closed as well as open.

Waste Management
With all the cleaning and washing in our kitchens, an efficient and easy way of disposing the frequently generated waste is specially relevant here. Using a crusher with the sink is one hygienic way of quick waste disposal. Alternatively, a waste bin placed under the sink or even fixed to an under counter shutter or drawer is very convenient. Keeping the kitchen free of fumes is very important for the well-being of the persons working there. A number of chimneys are available, with and without ducting to clear away the fumes.

Be Specific for Storage
Application of 'a place for everything and everything in its place', will make a small kitchen look spacious and a pleasure to work in. A modern kitchen has a number of appliances used in everyday cooking – a grinder, ovens, microwave and toaster, to mention some. All such appliances need to be placed suitably so that access is simple and easy which will encourage their use. Think about storage for crockery and utensils and a host of other things such as fresh fruits, veggies, grains etc. Everyday utensils need to be placed on easily accessible shelves. To avoid cluttering up the platform, shallow, smart shelves at a convenient location would be a good idea.

Steel wire-baskets and shelves are now available with Indian and imported fittings. Every corner of your kitchen can be converted into useful storage space. Cutlery trays, drawers, napkin rings etc will make your life in the kitchen easier. Consider your options and make the right choices.

Look matters
Besides the functional requirements, give aesthetics also a thought. The platform is best made in granite stone slab. Granite is available in the widest range of colours in a market. 'Corrian stone' is another excellent but expensive option for a joint less scratch proof surface.
