Chandigarh Chandnees clinch the ‘Women’s Premier League’ title

Mumbai: A dominant all round performance by Chandigarh Chandnees helped them secure a convincing 41-run win over the Madhya Pradesh Magicians, in the final of the inaugural Optimum Nutrition ‘Women Premier T20 League’, organised by Vile Parle Cultural Centre, with support from the Women’s Cricket Association of India, here at MIG Cricket Club on Wednesday.

Batting first, Chandigarh were well-served by Divya Sharma’s knock of 41, which helped them score 128/7 in their stipulated 20 overs. In response, Shakti Raut waged a lone battle for Madhya Pradesh, scoring 34, as the rest of the batting order collapsed around her to fold for 87 in 16 overs. Jyoti Kumari starred with the ball for Chandigarh, claiming 4 wickets and was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ for her exploits.

Fernandes, Dongrikar scores two each in Our Lady of Health win
Our Lady of Health Parish, Versova struck prime form to register a comfortable 4-1 win against Holy Cross Parish, Kurla in a Men’s veterans’ quarter-final match of the Dhoot Developers sponsored 5th All-Mumbai Inter-Parish football tournament for the ‘Orlem Super Cup’ played at the Church grounds.
Strikers Tony Fernandes and Sandeep Dongrikar were the heroes of Our Lady of Health’s win as both struck a brace of goals each, while Holy Cross pulled one back through Bonny Pereira.

However, there was something to cheer for Holy Cross Parish, Kurla as they defeated St. Joseph’s Parish ‘A’, Mira Road by a narrow 1-0 margin in a Men’s Open second round match. Holy Cross scored the lone goal through Charles F., which sealed their place in the quarter-finals.

St. Joseph’s Parish ‘B’, Mira Road managed to escape from being eliminated as they got the better of Our Lady of Health Parish, Sahar 6-5 via the tie-breaker after full-time ended in a goalless draw.

Bijlani, Pawar score hard-fought wins
Sanjiv Bijlani of Park Club and Santosh Pawar of Khar Gymkhana both scored hard-fought 4-3 wins in their respective first round, best-of-7 frames, matches of the Matunga Gymkhana 6-Red Open Snooker Tournament.

Bijlani produced a tremendous fight back to overcome Rishi Sanghani of Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana in a thrilling contest. Showing plenty of resilience Bijlani was on the brink of elimination as he was down 1-3, but he staged a solid recovery by winning the last three frames in succession to pull through winning at 27-43, 45-13, 2-35, 10-42, 35-5, 41-10 and 35-9 to scrape into the second round.

Willingdon Catholic and I.C. United in 2-2 draw
Mumbai: Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana shared the spoils as they were engaged in a keenly contested 2-all draw in a First Division match of the MDFA Leagues 2017-18 and played at the Cooperage ground.

In a fast-paced encounter, Lionel Fernandes and Innocent Fernandes scored a goal each for Willingdon Gymkhana while Walsh Trinadade and Aditya Shetty scored one each for United Club.
