Singing diva Asha Bhosle, who has ruled the music industry for more than six decades, is all set to judge the popular music reality show ‘Indian Idol-6’ which starts on Sony from June 1, Friday-Saturday at 8.30 pm. Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to the legendary singer about her new show.
What made you accept ‘Indian Idol 6’ as a judge?
Actually I had sworn off such shows because the ranking system of first, second and third really rankled me and especially the elimination rounds made me cry for the participants but Indian Idol is a reality show judged totally by the viewers.
Do you feel talent can be found in such shows?
Certainly. The previous editions have produced good talent. And it gives a platform to participants from all mofussil towns to the cities to display their talent.
What do you look for in a singer?
First I look for the ‘sur’ in a singer and then the diction, the language and the base of classical music.
Who are your idols?
My idols have always been my father Deenanath Mangeshkar who taught me music with sargam and alaap and he himself was a singer of great repute. Then Kishore Kumarji taught me how to communicate a song to the listener perfectly with the right throw and pace and to match the lead actor on whom the song is being picturised.
What about the other judges?
They are all my good friends – Anu Malik, Salim Merchant and Sunidhi Chauhan. I have sung for them many a time and so our vibes will definitely be good.
Any favorite composer?
Definetely. R.D.Burman.
Would you like Marathi songs to be sung?
Definetly. Marathi is my mother tongue and I have grown up and worked in Marathi films and Maharashtra is my state. So, Jai Maharashtra!
Are you confident about the success of the show?
Yes. I am. I have been following the show right from it’s inception and it has caught the fancy of the viewers and has sprung up many a talent and now the sixth season will take the show to a completely new level. So get ready to embark on a musical journey – a journey that every Indian will be touched by, move them and inspire them and entertain them for the next 14 weeks.
What else is happening?
I am continuing with my playback singing. Also my first film as a lead actor called ‘Maaee’ in Marathi and Hindi is complete and ready for release. The film is produced by Padmini Kolhapure and directed by Mahesh Kodiyal.
Ashatai is one of the most multi-faceted artistes we have ever seen!
