By Chaitanya Padukone

Although she has that charming girl-next-door look, model-actress Yogita Bihani wears a sunny smile which endears her to you. The 'badi kismatwali' Yogita was singled out to share screen-space with heart-throb Salman Khan in the popular promo of 'Dus Ka Dum', which instantly made her a famous household face. Not surprisingly, star-maker producer Ekta Kapoor and her team were fascinated with Bihani (she hails from Bikaner, Rajasthan) and eventually cast her to play the lead role in their upcoming Sony TV show 'Dil Hi Toh Hai', which goes on air from Monday, June 18 in the 10.00 pm slot. The Afternoon D & C connected with the exuberant Yogita for a candid conversation. Excerpts:

Did you plunge into showbiz acting-modeling by choice or by sheer chance?
Hey, of course, by choice. But then the golden chance came only recently (laughs).  It was my childhood ambition to become a model-actress in films. Unfortunately, none of my family or relatives had any connection with movies. So my aspirations had almost vanished. At the same time I would regularly act in local street-plays, which I enjoyed so much.

How come you bagged this cookery TV show assignment?
That happened when my corporate job tugged me to Mumbai and I later came to know about this cookery TV show 'Femme Foods', where I was selected among the 'Top Ten' girls. Not many people know that I am very passionate about cooking and my secret ambition is to open my own restaurant in future. While on this show I realised I was very camera-friendly. I started giving my auditions for movies, ad-films and TV Shows; And then I finally did a few commercials and later got selected for the 'Dus Ka Dum' promo with Salman Khan.

Weren’t you over-awed shooting with super-star Salman Khan?
Initially, it felt like I was watching a dream, that I was standing bang next to Salman Khan and after he planted a peck on my cheek it was exhilarating and a euphoric fan-girl-moment for me. Although he is such a mega-star, he is so unassuming and witty. Gosh, what an incredible memory – Salman-sir not only complimented me, he  remembered having met me earlier on some other audition shoot ka sets. As a young student, I used to fantasize that I was the romantic lead opposite Salman-sir in the movie 'Hum Saath Saath Hain'.

Were you recommended by Salman-bhai or by the channel for your TV show?
As regards Salman-Sir, I am not yet aware, but I know for sure that the Sony Channel team had sent my profile to Balaji following which they called me for the 'look-test'. After a few days, their stringent selection process was done and I was selected for 'Dil Hi Toh Hai', which starts telecast this Monday night.

What is the khaasiyat of your screen-character 'Palak' in 'DHTH'?
The fact that I am playing it (giggles). Jokes apart, my amazing modern character Dr. Palak Sharma is mentally strong, responsible, confident has her own opinions, is very kind-hearted and loves her family. At the same time she would not tolerate being degraded – she would give it back to that person. Strangely, I used to always fondly watch my co-star Karan Kundra regularly on his TV shows and now destiny has made him my 'Dil Hi…' ka co-star.

Who is your secret dream-movie hero you would love to be paired opposite?
It's got to be versatile star-actor Ranbir Kapoor. Frankly, I love the choices that he makes for his diverse roles, and I wish and hope in future he chooses 'me' as his screen-heroine (blushes).
