‘Being sandwiched between two wives is not so enviable: Nasirr Khan

One has most certainly enjoyed the crazy antics and evergreen songs ('Sar Jo Tera Chakraaye’ and ‘Zaraa Hatke Zara Bachke‘) of legendary scene-stealer actor-comedian Johnny Walker (real name Badruddin Kazi) in dozens of retro-Bollywood milestone movies like ‘Pyaasa’, ‘Madhumati’ and of course iconic ‘Anand’, where he had some of the most fabulous scenes with superstar Rajesh Khanna. The jovial Johnny passed on his legacy of histrionics to his versatile film and TV actor-model-director son Nasirr Khan, who has acted in a number of movies (‘Baghban’ and ‘Vazir’) and various TV shows. He will now be seen in the maverick TV soap sitcom ‘Meri Hanikarak Biwi’ which premieres from tonight (December 4) on & TV  and will be telecast from Monday to Friday in the prime time 10 pm slot. The Afternoon D&C had an exclusive chat with the candid Nasirr-bhai who is known for his witty one-liners.

Since you are quite discerning, what was zaraa hatke and exciting about this character that you are playing in the show?
Basically, humour ‘walks’ and jogs in my genes and my pulse. So unless it’s something really amazing, I wouldn’t go for it. Out here in this excellently-written slick funny show ‘Meri Hanikarak Biwi’, I play this multi-layered character Brijesh Pandey, also fondly called “BP” by his stunning dominating urban wife Devina (played by vivacious  Anjali Mukhi). It can also be called a totally ‘hatke’ rang-birangi character because he will alternately make you laugh, cry or even make you hate him because he is also a lovable ‘kameena’.

How is it being ‘sandwiched’ between two contrasting pretty wives?
Haha, I may be the dream-envy of every other off-screen husband of having an ethnic and western wife simultaneously. But only I know, how I am tactfully balancing and hoodwinking the two attractive biwis with recurring webs of ‘safed jhooth’, which I am an expert at (laughed).

Isn’t the serial dealing with a taboo and sensitive topic?
That’s right, the bold theme of our serious yet hilarious family sitcom is ‘male vasectomy’. Ironically,  the surgical procedure has been performed by error by an intern female doctor Dr Ira (spunky yet charming Jiyaa Shankar) on the unsuspecting male hero Akhilesh (naïve yet suave Karan Suchak), who plays my son and the ‘harmful’ doctor gets married to him to save her job. That explains the ‘light-hearted’ title. But, I personally I feel off-screen it’s a normal medical procedure, which no male should feel ashamed of. If we are able to convince even a section of the conservative audience that ‘vasectomy’ is nothing to be ashamed of just like one openly buys condoms at a chemist shop, I think our mission will be achieved.

What is the underlying social undercurrent theme in this show?
Traditionally, masculinity, both on-screen and off-screen, has always been associated with tags like macho, muscular, tough, etc. Any sign of male weakness or physical shortcomings are often shamed and not easily accepted. Dismissing stereotypes and highlighting how ‘being a man’ is a lot more than only imposing authority or advancing the family’s legacy is what the light-hearted show also attempts to convey.

Any secret desires of getting into reality TV Shows?
Definitely, maybe a dance show like ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’ and the adventurous ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’. Very few know that I am a dare-devil when it comes to close encounters with live crawlies and creepies and executing scary stunts (laughs).

You were planning to ‘direct’ a bio-pic dedicated to your legendary father Johnny Walker. What’s the latest status of that?
The pre-production is in full swing and it will definitely happen in the near future. Since I have passed that youthful age, I will not face the camera but it will be different and to portray his ‘true colours’. If I manage to get Raj Kumar Hirani as my creative advisor for this dream project, I will be able to achieve my mission faster.
