‘You will hate to love my complex character’: Zayed Khan

By Chaitanya Padukone

Having  made his striking telly-debut, zestful film actor Zayed Khan  ( son of iconic veteran actor-film-maker Sanjay Khan) is evidently having a blast shooting for the popular ongoing Sony TV weekday 9.30 pm finite show ‘Haasil’ . In which he plays the affluent business tycoon Ranvir Raichand . It may be recalled that  besides  various other movies, the suave Zayed has acted in the Shah Rukh Khan starrer musical milestone-superhit  ‘Main Hoon Na’ (2004). Incidentally, his charming interior-designer sister Suzanne ‘was’ married to  mega-star Hrithik Roshan. Afternoon D & C  had an exclusive chat with the articulate, outspoken Zayed. Excerpts:

So, how is the response to the Sony show and to your grey-shades character?
Amazing ! Home audiences are loving our  engaging thriller ‘love-triangle’ glam TV show full of startling twists and turns. All my film fans and new fans are now re-connecting with my multi-layered TV character Ranvir. They will , I guess, hate to love my complex grey-shades character.

Did you have any initial hang-ups debuting into television ?
Maybe initially I was a bit skeptical to jump on the telly bandwagon. Let’s face it,  the telly-screen is much more powerful than cinema in terms of exposure and penetration. That’s because over 70 per cent of people are addicted to watching their favourite TV shows . It assures instant fame and recognition. In the past, even my actor-film-maker dad Sanjay Khan-saab had produced and directed several iconic historical mega TV shows including ‘The Sword of Tipu Sultan’.

Secondly this random, tempting offer came to me from our family friends –the Malhotras  and they have such an illustrious Bollywood lineage. When I read the script and the graph of my shrewd, calculating character Ranvir, I found it very exciting, with awesome production values.  As was assured to me in advance,  ‘Haasil’ is being shot lavishly,  that too on international locations, by telly-‘showman’ Siddharth Malhotra.

How was it vibing with popular TV stars like Nikita Dutta and Vatsal Sheth who are ‘senior’ to you in the field of TV shows ?
Hey, there was absolutely no issue of any seniority. All three of us became best buddies from day one and the bonding  and chemistry shows on-screen. Both the gorgeous Nikita ( who plays ‘Aanchal’) and the handsome Vatsal ( who plays my younger brother ‘Kabir’ ) are now like an extended family. And I consider myself maha-lucky amidst this camaraderie. We even celebrated Nikita’s real-life birthday  on the sets with all the masti-mazaak.

Aren’t  you finding the TV shoot schedules quite taxing?
As compared to movie shootings, TV show shoots are  much more gruelling because there are rigid deadlines as our location-based show is already ‘on-air’ and we are shooting daily.  You know, even as I am making sacrifices, I am learning new stuff and growing as an actor and also enjoying it. It’s a new journey, a new innings for me. Although it’s hectic, shooting for ‘Haasil’,  at times I feel I am on a vacation trip. That’s because we keep having a merry blast on the sets, often fondly ‘ragging’ fun-loving, calorie-conscious Nikita.

As we usher in the new year 2018….
It’s so heartening. Mujhe laakhon naye aur puraane fans ka pyaar, dobaara ‘haasil’ hua hai  ( smiles). Cheers ! Wishing everyone a safe, successful, happy new year, ahead.
