Artisans for artistes

Thursday, June 07, 2018

Sustaining artisans and the environment, Ruas works on effecting the balance.  Aditi Dubey Lee speaks to Joanne Pinto Pereira on adhering to zero waste and the line of crafts designed for artistes

Ruas, which is also an acronym for Rural Artisans, is a social enterprise focused on raising the livelihoods of traditional women embroidery artisans in India. Says founder Aditi, “We believe in the power of CO-design and create products for the artist in all of us. We also focus on preserving historic embroidery forms such as Suf, Jat, Rabari and Ahir along with raising awareness about them.

Aditi, a writer and photographer is passionate about women empowerment and traditional craft forms.  She has introduced a range of functional handicrafts for artistes.  On  the path forward for Ruas which has been running on a small scale for the past three years, she says, “this year we have many exciting things in the works! That includes new products, a better online shopping experience, events and exhibitions. We will also be focusing on conducting a lot more research on traditional embroidery in India and the story of the lives of the people behind the crafts."

Recycling

Ruas has a zero waste policy.  According to Aditi, "We  believe in creating the lowest carbon footprint in the environment. All the waste fabric is converted into new products such as chokers and the Ruas Art Case.  With a finishing of embroidery, the art case is designed to keep brushes be it is your makeup or paint supplies.

Embroidery tales

As Aditi weaves in the fascinating  stories of embroidery used in Ruas creations, she explains, "Each embroidery form has its own history related to the community it belongs to. For example: Ahirs consider themselves the descendants of the gopis of Krishna. Suf is another stunning embroidery form created from the artisan’s imagination in triangular forms. It requires a lot of skill and patience.” Ruas is in the process of working on their new collection which will be available to their patrons from July 1.
