Hot Or Not: Over The Top Shoes

Thursday, January 11, 2018

This trend is stylish and loved by many, but despised by a few! Over the top (OTT) shoes are all about bold architectural moments, understated neutrals and custom bling. From Kendall Jenner’s knee-high shoes to Katy Perry’s custom made Swarovski crystal-encrusted ankle booties, over the top shoes have been the best bet for a chic look. Sunny Rodricks asks people from across the city how they feel about the trend

Simply outlandish

The over the top shoe trend is not my cup of tea. The idea of wearing something mismatched is very quirky. It portrays a completely outlandish personality. I would rather go with a pretty pair of peeptoes or wedges.

– Steffi Fernandes, recruitment consultant

Funky & elegant

I think over the top shoes are funky and can be worn only on funky clothes. I personally believe that they portray the wild side of a woman, but they also show the positive side of freedom and choice of women in society. I usually wear them on a black dress because it brings out the elegance within me!

– Urmee Sathe, PR professional

Dominant & Appealing

These shoes give a sense of intensity and define and dominate your entire look. Visually, they are appealing and beautiful. But personally, I wouldn’t wear them because they don’t seem comfortable and they are definitely not long lasting. I don’t think it’s worth the money!

– Meagan Vaz, early childhood educator

These kinds of statement shoes are mostly targeted for styling concepts for a catwalk or photo shoots and are best avoided in real life!

– Ohaila Khan, designer

Pretty but outrageous

The fashion world is always experimenting with over the top footwear on runways. And to add to that, celebrities like Lady Gaga have popularized footwear that seem impossible to stand in, let alone walk in. Even the thought of wearing them for an entire day seems outrageous. They look pretty and speak a lot for themselves and the wearer, but bringing the runway and the OTT trends to everyday life feels unrealistic and uncomfortable.

– Shreyasi Pathak, stylist at Vajor

Hot, cool & chic

OTT boots are winter’s hot favourite. Apart from the basic black and beige, the boots can also be tried in vivid colours of blue and red, and in metallic shades such as gold and silver, with textures ranging from suede to glitter. They say boots and bling are a girl’s thing. Embellish the boots with bling to make a fashion statement.

– Vijay Pal Singh Johal, director, Truffle collection

Stand out with these shoes

Over the top shoes can make you stand out from the crowd, be it for their designs or appeal. You can complement such dressing with denim and even casual trousers that fit well.

– Kim Virk, business head at Carlton London
