Oklahoma based artist Janavi Mahimtura brings her exhibition Reflect to Refract to Mumbai. Kasturi Gadge finds out what’s in store...
When did you decide to become an artist?
I’ve always loved painting. As a teenager, I used to study the human form and make anatomical drawings. I knew I wanted to be an artist but my father wanted me to become a civil engineer! So, to prove myself I put up my first exhibition when I was 16. It got a wonderful response and so began my journey as an artist.
Where did you get your formal training from?
I attended the School of Art Institute at Chicago, Illinois in the United States of America. I took up advanced painting and graduated in 2009 with a BFA in painting.
Tell us about your style.
I believe in conceptualism. I don’t like painting my emotions, because; let’s face it, who wants to buy my moods? I capture a moment in my head and think, ‘Hey that would be fun to paint!’ I love working with oils and lot of layers. I also use handmade paint as it is so pure. I use pure kolinsky sable brushes against a linen oil primed canvas because it allows me to work on fine details. My work is neither photo-realistic nor is it completely abstract. It’s a good mix of distinctive styles such as illustrations, figures and reality.
How did Reflect to Refract happen?
I swim every day and love noticing the shadow it creates. These images attract me and fascinate me all the time. During my trip to Lakshadweep, I went for a dive. While I was underwater the distorted images caught my attention. That’s when I started working on Reflect to Refract.
What inspires your work?
Everything! Things I observe or see inspire me. History, people, current affairs... everything makes me want to paint.
You are based in Oklahoma, does the response towards your art change from city to city?
I have showcased at Dubai, Netherlands, Chicago, Amsterdam and lot of other places. The response has been fantastic all over. I’ve managed to sell all my paintings all the time. May be people like the hint of satire I add to my work. That way they connect with it.
What’s your take on Mumbai’s art scene?
Mumbai is home! I have had five shows here and people in the city have loved my work.
Who is your favourite artist?
Jacques-Louis David, an artist from the French revolution era. My favourite painting of his is Napoleon Crossing The Alps.
Can you sum up Reflect to Refract in one word?
Fun!
