21 arrested as UK targets people smuggling gang in raids
British police made 21 arrests today during a series of raids against a suspected people smuggling network that is accused of bringing hundreds of migrants across the English Channel. Officials say some 350 officers took part in raids in several parts of England including the northeast, the south coast and London. They targeted roughly 20 addresses after a yearlong investigation supported by authorities in France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Afghan army officers fired over Kabul military base attack
Seven Afghan army officers, including two generals, have been sacked over a deadly attack on a Kabul military base, President Ashraf Ghani said today, as the Afghan capital braces for further assaults. At least five attackers -- gunmen and suicide bombers -- launched the pre-dawn raid claimed by the Islamic State group on January 29, killing 11 soldiers and wounding 16.

S Africa's ANC divided on Zuma's fate: party official
Top officials in South Africa's ruling ANC party are divided over whether President Jacob Zuma should step down after multiple graft scandals, the party's deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte said today. Zuma is due to deliver the annual state of the nation address to parliament in Cape Town on Thursday, despite growing calls for him to quit before the speech. The African National Congress' national executive committee will meet on Wednesday, hours before the address. The 80-member national executive committee is the ANC's highest decision-making body and could "recall" Zuma from the post of president -- though he may also refuse to comply.

Air strikes toll in Syria’s Ghouta rises to 33: monitor
THE death toll from Syrian regime air strikes on the rebel-held enclave of Eastern Ghouta near Damascus today has risen to 33, a monitoring group said. Strikes on several locations in the besieged area east of the capital also wounded more than 100 people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
