US Senate reaches two-year budget deal to avert govt shutdown
The US Senate today reached a rare bipartisan compromise to avert another crippling government shutdown by reaching a two-year budget deal to raise spending on military and domestic programmes by almost USD 300 billion. The deal, agreed upon by both the Democratic and Republican leaders of the Senate, was immediately welcomed by the White House. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer announced the budget deal in the House of Representatives.

Key Trump aide quits as ex-wives allege abuse
Rob Portman, White House Staff Secretary and a close aide of US President Donald Trump, resigned today after his two ex-wives accused him of physical and emotional abuse. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters Portman has resigned, a day after the UK-based Daily Mail newspaper published allegations of his two ex-wives, Colbie Holderness and Jennifer Willoughby, accusing him of domestic violence. Portman, 40, has, however, denied the allegations.
    
India ranks 44 out of 50 nations in global IP index
India has "increased substantially" its score in the latest international Intellectual Property (IP) index released by the US Chambers of Commerce today, ranking 44th out of 50 countries. India's overall score has increased substantially from 25 per cent (8.75 out of 35) in the 5th edition of the Index to 30 per cent (12.03 out of 40) in the 6th edition, according to the annual report prepared by the Global Innovation Policy Center (GIPC) of the US Chambers of Commerce. Despite improvement in the score, India continues to remain towards the bottom of the ladder. It now ranks 44 out of 50 countries. Last year, India ranked 43rd out of 45 countries with an overall score if 8.4 points.

Rescuers brave aftershocks as bodies pulled from teetering Taiwan tower
Taiwanese rescuers today braved aftershocks coursing through a dangerously leaning apartment block that was partially toppled by a deadly earthquake as their search for survivors uncovered two more bodies. At least nine people were killed and dozens remained missing after a 6.4-magnitude quake hit the popular eastern tourist city of Hualien late Tuesday, according to a revised toll from the national fire agency.
