Sheena Bora Murder Trial

Sheena Bora murder case accused Indrani Mukerjea says she ate dal rice in her cell and fell unconscious as she claims that someone is trying to kill her in prison

In a sensational turn in the Sheena Bora Murder case being heard at the Sessions Court in South Mumbai, prime accused Indrani Mukerjea stated that she fears for her life.

This happened when the court proceedings were nearly ended yesterday and Indrani Mukerjea went up to the witness box to speak to the judge and said, “I fear for my life..somebody is trying to kill me in prison. I am constantly looking over my shoulder.”

Referring to the incident earlier this month on April 6, when she was rushed to the government JJ hospital where she was found to have taken an overdose of anti-depressants, she said she fell unconscious in prison after she had dal rice which was kept covered in a bowl in her cell. That day, being a Friday, she was on fasting as always and had eaten nothing else, she told the judge.

She emphasised that she had not consumed anything solid or liquid when she had come to court, nor had she spoken to anyone but her three lawyers.
“I entered the prison at 4.40 pm. After I ate the dal rice at 5.20 pm, I felt drowsy, tired and became incoherent,” Mukerjea said.

Thereafter, she had some medicine that a prison guard gave her in a slip of paper, and said she could not remember anything till April 9, that is, three days later.

Indrani said she was told at the hospital she had consumed something called Benzodiazephine. She told Special CBI judge J.C. Jagdale that the same episode had taken place before. She was referring to a similar incident in 2015 when she had been admitted in hospital for drug overdose. About that incident she said that she had not even attended court then and that the same food had been given last time too.

'I am told the drug was present up to 6000 mg, I would have died,” she said. “If it happens the third time, I cannot deal with it,” she added.

She sought to clarify that while it is being made out that she had consumed the substance on purpose, she had not done so.

Indrani further said that she had not yet recorded her statement regarding this before the DIG, Prisons. The former media executive said she did not want the matter to be twisted, that she is filing this in court before she gives her statement to the prison authorities.

Indrani Mukerjea, former head of INX Media is facing trial for the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora. The murder in which her ex-husbands Sanjeev Khanna and Peter Mukerjea are co-accused, came to light when her driver Shyamvar Rai, spilled the beans when he was arrested for possessing an illegal arm.
