Bhutan PM has exemplary lifestyle

Wednesday, March 27, 2019

We have come across media reports that indicate that the current Prime Minister of Bhutan, Lotay Tshering, who is a doctor, is serving his country in more ways than one. The 51-year-old Lotay, who studied Urology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, USA, is a qualified surgeon, the only practicing trained one in his specialty field in Bhutan. Lotay is someone who, besides his political duties, is also known to attend to citizens in his capacity as doctor and surgeon. Working as the Prime Minister on weekdays and performing surgeries on weekends as a freelance doctor, Tshering, currently, is considered one of the best medical practitioners in Bhutan. According to news outlet ‘Northeast Now’, on Thursdays, Tshering can be found at Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital, the main hospital of Bhutan located in its capital Thimpu. One can see him making academic rounds from 7:30-10am, giving advice to trainees and would-be doctors. And on Saturdays he conducts surgeries for those in need. In an interview, when asked how life has changed after becoming PM, Lotay said: “Nothing has changed because my number of work hours, 15-16 hours a day has not changed. Instead of spending at the Operation Theatre (OT), I spend at the PMO. And twice a week, I always go to the hospital and most Thursdays, unless it is very important, I start from the hospital. So over all, lifestyle has not changed, responsibility has changed. Until now, I was concerned with treating patients. Now I am concerned with treating policies (as well).”
