Someone who’s had four decades of career as a newscaster, stage actress and activist and is still going strong nowadays is the inimitable Dolly Thakore, whose play ‘The Vagina Monologues’ (TVM) is now in its 17th year. Dolly was awarded last week, by Rahul DaCunha, Shernaz Patel and Rajit Kapur’s Rage productions, as a doyenne of theatre -- one among nine women stalwarts to be so felicitated. Says Dolly whose apartment is chock-full of awards she’s received down the years: “Every award counts because there’s always the thrill of recognition that comes with it.” Dolly remembers her best theatrical performances as those in ‘Death of a Salesman’ and ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ even though in the latter the lead role was played by Sabira Merchant and not by her. With Mahabanoo Mody Kotwal’s play ‘The Vagina Monologues’ the actress has had her longest stint in a single play and, in fact, the cast has even performed it in Hindi for the residents of Dharavi! Dolly tells us that she has been called upon innumerable times in these past decades to talk or judge college competitions and by NGOs that are involved in the upliftment of the girl child/underprivileged children. As we congratulate her on her latest award, she informs us that there are no less than seven shows of ‘The Vagina Monologues’ scheduled on two days – 6 and 7 April – at the Prithvi Theatre in Juhu. Seems like there’s no stopping the TVM hurricane, is there?
