It is welcome news (as we go to press) that IAF pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman is to be released by Pakistan today. Shortly after the news on Wednesday of his being taken captive by our neighbouring country, emerged a ‘Dawn’ media video of the captured pilot answering questions posed by a Pakistani interviewer. In the video Abhinandan offers thanks to the Pakistani defence officer who rescued him from the mob, states his name, that he’s from India and married. However, he refuses to answer questions on which aircraft he was flying or what his mission was, saying, “I’m sorry, I’m not supposed to tell you this.” Here were some of the reactions on social media to the news of Abhinandan’s captivity and to his video:
Shekhar Gupta (Journalist): “Ejected, beaten, bloodied, blindfolded, handcuffed, in enemy captivity... What do you say? This is my name, rank & religion. I’m not supposed to tell you anything else. Such courage, calm and professionalism it shows. You’re an inspiration to your countrymen Wing Commander Abhinandan.”
Mehbooba Mufti (Politician): “Calm and dignified. Hats off to Wing Commander Abhinandan. Takes a lot of courage to conduct oneself with such composure at a time like this. So dear warmongers, keyboard warriors and most of all hyper-nationalistic prime time anchors, learn a lesson or two.”
Vicky Kaushal (Actor): “I bow down to (your) bravery and dignity. Praying for your safe return.”
Shobhaa De (Writer): “India salutes you. Bloodied but not bowed. IAF.”
Hrithik Roshan (Actor): “Such courage, dignity, honour and grace under pressure. My thoughts are with you. Respect.”
Shabana Azmi (Actor): Respect. Your dignity, your composure is so inspiring. Praying for your safe return.”
Shekhar Kapur (Director): “Wing Commander Abhinandan, you have become a beacon of courage patriotism and dignity. And also, a beacon of hope. We look forward to welcome you home soon, Sir.”
Anand Mahindra (Industrialist): (Commenting on Abhinandan’s video in captivity) “From the raging river of battle can emerge such images that remind us all of our common humanity and take us back to the shores of peace…”
