As the clock strikes 12 tonight, Elphinstone Road station's name would be changed to Prabhadevi. Though the decision was taken last year in June, the actual name change had been delayed owing to the tragic stampede of September as apart from being highly insensitive, the move would have caused issues in documentation of the probe in the incident.
“Necessary changes are being made regarding station boards, indicators and public address system for the benefit of passengers,” said Ravinder Bhakar, Chief Public Relations Officer, Western Railway. The station code for Prabhadevi railway station would be PBHD. Since significant amount of time has passed since the tragedy, the name is being changed now, said a senior railway official.
The demand to change the name of Elphinstone Road station had come to fore with the one to add Maharaj to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. The decision in both cases had been made after much deliberation over the voices of the locals and the political tussle that has ensued. In such cases, old land documents and names are also pondered over.
