In a shocking incident, a 19-year-old maidservant committed suicide allegedly due to aspersions cast on her by the family who hired her. The girl jumped off the 18th floor of Oberoi Splendor building located near the Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) in Jogeshwari (E) late night on Monday.

According to Meghwadi police sources, the girl was working at the flat of Sevaram Khanna, who is the business head of ICICI Lombard, for the last few months. The deceased, who has been identified as Jyoti Harishchandra Patekar, was working in the flat along with another girl who was a full-time maid.

During the investigation it was revealed that Khanna's wife suspected the maid of having a hand in her missing silver ornaments. They interrogated the maid several times, implicating her in the case. She was allegedly mentally tortured by her employer, due to which she committed suicide, police said.

Her body was first seen by the building watchman who informed Khanna, who in turn intimated the local police. The other maid working at the flat revealed to the police that Khanna and his wife suspected Jyoti of stealing the silver ornaments, police added.

Meghwadi police further revealed that, the deceased Jyoti, who hailed from Ratnagiri, was staying alone in the city. Her body was sent to Holy Spirit Hospital for autopsy and her family members have been informed.

On the basis of primary information an accidental death report (ADR) has been reported, but the police are waiting for Jyoti's family members and based on their charges a case for abatement of suicide will be recorded.
