Release and other stories by Rakhshanda Jalil explores the lives of ordinary Indian Muslims, and their everyday existence with the nuances and undercurrents that become evident only on closer scrutiny. So there is grief and separation, frailty and strength, resilience and defeats, revenge and jealousy, the illusion of domestic harmony, the discord that breeds within a marriage, the inexplicability of what attracts one person to another.

At the core of everything is a mighty heart which happens to be the title of her first story. It is about a wily man with two wives, who manages to have three children from each of them. Both the wives are named Seemab, their eldest boys are named Haroon, the daughters in the middle are named Rashida and the youngest sons from the two wives are named Zain. ‘Mirza has hidden his double life rather well. The children’s gender is Allah’s will; the rest is Mirza’s doing.’
