Akshay Jalan, Co-founder, Brainsmith

Akshay Jalan along with Tejal Bajla is the founder of Brainsmith. Akshay is the operational and research genius behind Brainsmith. He has earned his Engineering degree from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra and was elected by BASES, Stanford University’s E-Bootcamp in the top 100 college entrepreneurs’ category. His deep desire for learning drives him to continuously explore and create unique learning tools that create opportunities for young children to learn anything.

In conversation with Dominic Rebello, he reveals how he strives to come up with the most innovative products that parents, teachers and educationists can use for facilitating early child learning and brain development.

What are the special features of Quantum Cards?
At Brainsmith we believe in creating very high quality educational products which have a huge global appeal Most of the product artwork is hand illustrated to maintain uniformity and originality All Products are born out of in-depth research and consumer testing before we launch in the market Our Company is driven by a Mother, Tejal Bajla who comes in with hands on experience ensuring all our products appeal to children and parents both.

How did the idea occur to you?
Ans. In my previous stint (Humming Whale Product Innovations) we were involved in sector agnostic product innovations. It became very clear that the lack of focus towards a particular area or sector was a huge deterrent to the growth of the company. Doing everything and being everywhere is not the best business strategy. It is then that I met Amith Bajla an educationist and his wife Tejal, a hands on mother then to their first born, who were toying with the idea of developing early learning products. We realized over endless coffees and detailed discussions that her idea and my interests were in sync and that we had complimentary skill sets. Thus was born Brainsmith.

From my research:
Over the last decade we have seen a sharp rise in the number of international schools and pre-schools being built, with high service standards and world-class curriculums. Contrary to that there aren’t many companies creating high quality educational content to service the needs and requirements of these institutions. We seek to address this gap in the market by creating great quality, appropriate, country specific content and products to aid their teaching requirements.

How do you plan to scale up?
We plan to create and develop a whole host of innovative products for kids in the age group 0-10 yrs while focusing on building our distribution channels in India and Overseas. Our next product is due for launch in coming month, December. In addition, we are also in detailed negotiations to launch disruptive great quality international products on our platform In India.

Who would primarily be your consumer audience?
Our primary audience is parents of children in the age- group 0-10 years, followed by schools and preschools, activity centres and early education specialists.
We are working towards creating a strong pipeline of products for expectant mothers too.

Where do you see yourself five years down the road?
Over the next 5 years we aspire to be the leaders in the space of early learning products with an established strong distribution network in India and Overseas. In this journey our emphasis will be on great quality, innovation and global appeal.
